Pretty Young Things

Just heard Gian Gomeshi interview Kelly Cutrone on The Q. She is someone I would like to have drink with, pick her brain. Interesting how she positioned her entry into reality television as a logical extension of her pr work and it is actually believable. It doesn’t sound like she is in it for the fame. She had some great thoughts on reality tv, pr, communications, fashion as accessible art, and being a working mom on a show populated by PYTs (pretty young things). The Q, March 16, 2010

Thoughts on the Games from inside a Turquoise uniform, from inside the Main Media Centre

I am actually enjoying working the Olympics. Saw Matt Lauer and a bunch of important politicians. Some athletes. Tons of journalists. There are rumours that Stephen Colbert is lurking around. Sometimes I scan their passes to make sure they can come in. As you do. Yesterday I gave directions to someone from NPR and couldn’t stop myself from telling her just how much I love NPR. She was surprisingly unperturbed by my nerdy media fandom.
I’m uncomfortable wearing the turquoise as people now see me as part of the whole thing. Continue reading

Review of The Blue Dragon by Robert Lepage

I saw Robert LePage’s The Blue Dragon this evening at the SFU Experimental Theatre at the Woodward’s development. The show uses technology and digital media to take the play to astonishing places. The actors seamlessly interacted with the digital media projected onto the stage, at times painting the projections onto the set with brushes. I was impressed with how unobtrusively and organically the technology intersected with traditional theatre.

The two story set design was incredible, taking us from airport to river bank to starry sky to karaoke bar to loft apartment  with a flash of lightening. They rode bikes while trains sped in the distance. It seemed like magic the way the actors disappeared off stage on one level, instantly walking onto stage on another level.

It is a shame that the story was as weak as it was because the potential was so big. Continue reading

Jason Priestly gives the Today Show a tour of Vancouver

The Simpsons visit Vancouver. My nationalism reaffirms it’s inferiority complex.

I love it when they mention us. More often than not when Canada is mentioned on American television, I squeal a little. Even more so when we become part of the narrative. I remember an episode of That 7o’s Show when the cast makes a trip across the border. I loved the cliche jokes: It’s true! We are polite! And apologize a lot! Tee hee!

With the Olympics in Vancouver it’s a constant thrill. Vancouver was the subject of the The Simpson’s last Sunday.
